Tonight’s Takeaways: Hat Tricks Effort Falls Short in 3-2 OT Loss Vs. Maryland

Sep 21, 2024

Odenton, MD | Patrick Frenette

Although the Hat Tricks showed perseverance in tonight’s contest, they were unfortunately bested by their division rival, the Maryland Black Bears. They showed resiliency in the latter of two periods, while also not slowing down in the first period.

Hat Tricks Show Strength Of New Squad

The Hat Tricks were able to conquer all three periods by knowing how to keep their composure. Through three unsuccessful power plays, Danbury kept their game tight. After the first goal from Maryland, the team was able to lock down possible opportunities, with Kiesewtter making 15 saves in the first period and the defense making it hard for the Black Bears to breathe in the Hat Tricks defensive zone. Gates Omicioli grabbed a goal and the Hat Tricks had two successful penalty kills in the second frame, which would highlight the resiliency this team is learning to play with. In the final period, Ameen Ghosheh was able to answer Kareem El-Bashir’s goal late, to send the game into overtime. Although it was not a winning result, this game stands a testament to what they are capable of.

Kiesewetter Keeps Up With Motew, Has Tough Outing in OT

Reflecting Kiesewetter’s second start of the 2024-25 season, he went toe-to-toe with Black Bears netminder, Benji Motew, through three periods of play. Thomas made 40 saves on 42 shots, which is the most he has faced this season thus far (faced 30 shots vs. Elmira in 8-2 victory). The Hat Tricks goaltender was also to make a save on a breakaway chance midway through the contest, of which also happened to be on a 2-on-0 rush. Kiesewetter would finish the night making 41 saves on 44 shots faced.

Lineup Notes

The Hat Tricks had two players making their season debut for the team tonight. Those being ninth round draft pick, Niko Tournas, who played with the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders of the USHL last season, and Ty Izadi, who was on the IR to start the 2024-25 campaign. Both players made great efforts on their respective shifts in the contest. Niko grabbed his first assist as a Hat Trick on the second goal of the game, which was a centering pass for Ameen Ghosheh.
